Real-Time Cutting Temperature Measurement in Turning of AISI 1045 Steel through an Embedded Thermocouple—A Comparative Study with Infrared Thermography

During machining processes, a high temperature is generated in the cutting zone due to deformation of material and friction chip along surface tool. This has detrimental effect on tool, for this reason, it utmost importance assess real time during these processes. Despite all advances investigation field, accurately measuring remains great challenge. In sense, work intends contribute solving problem by experimentally evaluating potential developed approach embedding thermocouples into rake face tools dry turning AISI 1045 steel different parameters comparing obtained results with infrared thermography measurements at exact same point. A well-defined, smooth micro-groove good quality was produced laser modification. Then laser-welded K-type thermocouple fixated MgO ceramic adhesive, ensuring protection from wear chips, which allowed creation WC-Co inserts ability measure tool maximum error 0.96%. Results showed that, despite yielding trend, measured IR thermographic camera always lower than embedded thermocouple. The proposed method proved be reliable, precise, accurate, cost-effective real-time measurement capable providing useful information parameter optimization, thus allowing increased productivity life.
